Crimestoppers
is probably the very best crime-fighting tool we have at our disposal. Many of the crimes we solve are because of
leads given to us by Crimestoppers.
Now,
Crimestoppers has agreed to collect tips, not only on crimes that have already
been committed, but also from people who suspect people in their neighborhood may
commit future crimes.
Crimestoppers
will now pass along those tips to law enforcement too. Do you think this will help?

Parish Sheriff Harry Lee

I agree with the sherriff crimestoppers has really been a blessing to our community here in Jefferson Parish. The new policy of taking calls in order to prevent crimes can only bring positive results. Now is the time for organizations like crimestoppers to take a more pro-active approach to solving crime. Thanks wdsu for helping crimestoppers to make our community safer this is a step in the right direction.

I am all for Crimestoppers. I think they do an outstanding job. How will you handle people that someone supects may commit a future crime? In theory, that could be everyone.

Crimestoppers and other organizations like this are essential to our community. What is important is that all members of the community join in the effort of reporting crime and coming forward as witnesses to criminal activities. We must work together.

I am 100% for Law Enforcement doing whatever they can to make the New Orleans Metropolitan area safer. The only bad part about this I see is how do we prove someone is going to commit a crime without any reasonable evidence? But all in all I belive this idea will be a sucess.

I think it opens the door for every delusional paranoid in the area to waste the Departments time and resources ($$$$)

It is not the job of the JPSO to police intent. This has a huge potential for abuse. How better to get revenge on someone by placing an unfounded cloud of suspicion over their head. They don't even need to have done anything. I'll have less of these Nanny State ideas, please.

Crimestoppers is an excellent resource and very effective. I have a problem with reporting people one the basis that they "might" commit a future crime - that seems like the antithesis of what our ideals and our country are about. What happened to innocent until proven guilty??? I can't imagine how the department would follow up on such a tip anyway - it's highly impractical to knock on someone's door and try to ask them questions about something they might do in the future, but haven't done yet - even if by some weird happenstance they might actually be planning to commit a crime, they'd have to be real idiots to admit it. I bet you get a lot of calls from bitter ex-wives (who are also the most frequent reporters of tax fraud). Anyway, the data shows we have more than enough people who ARE committing crimes and haven't been jailed yet - let's keep our focus on them!! And then let's keep them in jail and get them some kind of training. Criminals and people recently returned from prison without any skills or rehabilitation are the most likely to commit crimes, anyway.

I think Crimestoppers and Neighborhood Watches are invaluable. I feel very secure in knowing if I notice folks who don't belong in my neighborhood, just hanging out, I can call and have them checked out. Why wait until a child is snatched or assulted by a pervert or houses are broken into.

Sounds like witch hunting McCarthyism to me. Anyone could report anyone else, just because of a grudge. Let's see, my ex might be a pedophile, my neighbor might be a terrorist and an ex friend who has a gun might commit a murder.
And what would I be reported for?
On the other hand, to be able to ask law enforcement to pass by a suspected drug dealing site, check a chop shop, etc., would be reasonable. But as presented, the current proposal goes beyond acceptable.

Let Harry Lee do what he needs to do. Crime in this area is out of control and drastic measures need to be taken. If one's only approach to solving a problem is reacting, the problem will never be solved. I think we could use even more proactive ideas like this.

I agree with the sheriff. People are being killed every day and these organizations are talking about politics what write and whats wrong. Killing is wrong. Anyone in there write mind would loved to be searched if that means less people getting killed on the streets. People are losing there lives. Wake up I'll say it one more time PEOPLE ARE DYING. Its not about whats moraly write or wrong anymore. Its about saving lives.

Does that include the police officer I saw place drugs on a young black man on Monday night. This what will become of this, false arrest and wrongful inprisonment. Sterotypes, DWB, and all other violations of our civil liberties.

Come now. If I don't like you, I will not be reporting you. If I see you dealing drugs or there is suspicious activities, I will. The multi-agency sweep by Jefferson Parish is a good idea. This will pinpoint areas of potential problems.
